If you’re in the market to meet someone, there’s even a site, twitterbirds.com, for singles who want to hook up via romantic tweets. The site also hosts regular Tweet speed-dating sessions online. Apparently, it’s not as barmy as it sounds.

“It’s perfect if you are a busy, urban single. After all, condensing your life in 140 characters is basically just extreme speed dating and with Twitter you’re not trapped face to face if you’re not interested – you just log out,” says social networking expert James Kirkham.

“With tweets, you get the ins and outs of someone’s daily routine, and what better way to truly get to know a new lover than hearing about what they had for breakfast, or how they plan to spend their evening?

“You’re able to eavesdrop on their life but from a safe distance – the best possible preparation to find out what someone is really like.”

Want to try your hand at Twitter Dating? Here are some tips for success:

KEEP IT REAL

Whether you’re in the market for a brief fling or something more long-term, the same rules apply.

Keep your tweets truthful and transparent or risk being left red-faced. People can smell dishonesty on Twitter a mile off.

“Wondering if I should drive the Porsche or the Bentley today” doesn’t make you sound like a stud. It makes you sound like a liar. And “Still stuck in JFK first-class lounge” doesn’t sound jet-set, it sounds arrogant.

BE SELECTIVE

Want to be seen as healthy, active and sporty? Why not remind your followers when you plan to head to the gym, or re-tell that funny story from last night’s rock climbing session.

Fancy yourself as a bit of a muso? Why not tell people what obscure indie band you’re listening to. Selective tweets are more likely to introduce you to like-minded singles.

DON’T TAKE IT TOO SERIOUSLY

With the character limit placed on each tweet, you’re never really going to know if a tweeting rapport means romance is in the air until you meet each other.

Still, if their early-morning tweet about the colour of their pants has made you laugh, then perhaps your fellow Twitter really is the person for you...
